The architecture is distinctive. The problem is that peak summer Santorini now functions primarily as a backdrop for content creation and luxury consumption. The cruise ships arrive every morning. The sunset queue in Oia starts in the early afternoon. A decent hotel room in July costs more than most European capital cities. The island has not lost its beauty — it has lost its ability to provide a peaceful version of it.
Crowd pressure
Oia's sunset point is so congested that people queue for it hours in advance. Cruise ships deposit thousands of day visitors daily in summer. Fira's main commercial strip is relentless.
Why visit
The caldera views are genuinely extraordinary. The architecture is iconic for a reason. The wine is good. Just not at peak summer.

Ferry from Athens (Piraeus) around 5-8hrs, or fly from Athens in 45min. Ferry from Mykonos and other islands.
The honest version
Expensive, crowded, and increasingly behaves like a luxury consumption event rather than a place. The sunsets are still real. Everything else requires effort.
