Jeju is South Korea's premier domestic holiday destination and has UNESCO status for its volcanic geological features — Hallasan, the lava tube system, and the tuff cone islands offshore. The island has a genuinely distinct culture, including the haenyeo — women free divers who have been harvesting abalone and seafood for centuries without equipment, and whose culture is now UNESCO Intangible Heritage. Visitor numbers in summer and on Korean public holidays can be very large. The island is large enough that quieter areas exist if you move away from the most famous sights.

Hallasan mountain trails and Jeju's famous waterfalls get very busy on Korean public holidays and summer weekends. Peak domestic tourism volumes are significant.

Hallasan volcano (South Korea's highest peak), lava tube caves, haenyeo diving women, excellent black pork, and a distinct island identity from mainland Korea.

April-May (cherry blossom, fewer crowds) or October-November

Jeju International Airport with frequent flights from Seoul and Busan. Car hire essential for most sights.

Primarily a domestic Korean tourism destination, which means peak-season congestion follows Korean public holiday patterns. Less international tourist infrastructure than Seoul.

Instead of Jeju

Geoje offers Korean island scenery, coastal hiking, and spring camellia forests with a fraction of Jeju's domestic tourist pressure. A good choice for travellers using Busan as a base who want island character without Jeju's peak-season congestion.
