Hoi An
Hoi An is extraordinarily beautiful. The ancient trading port, where Chinese, Japanese, European, and Vietnamese influences merged over four centuries, created an urban environment unlike anywhere else in Vietnam — a low-rise, canal-laced town of yellow walls, tiled roofs, wooden shopfronts, and beautiful details. It fully deserves its UNESCO status. The problem is that it now receives a volume of visitors that has turned the Ancient Town into a tourist zone. The best restaurant streets are almost entirely catered to visitors. The bicycle lanes are full of cyclo tours. Early morning before 7am is when the real town briefly appears.
Crowd pressure
The Ancient Town is extremely congested, particularly around the Japanese Covered Bridge. The lantern-lit streets at night are beautiful but heavily crowded. Mass tourism from day trippers from Da Nang adds significant pressure.
Why visit
The ancient port town architecture is genuinely extraordinary — a UNESCO site combining Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and European influences. The tailoring culture is famous. The food is excellent.
Best window
February-April for dry weather; lantern festival varies
Getting there
Fly to Da Nang (30min drive south). Taxis, motorbike hire, and bicycle within the town.
The honest version
The Ancient Town is now primarily a tourist infrastructure zone. Prices have risen significantly. The lantern photos are beautiful and the reality is crowded.

Hue
Vietnam
Hue offers Vietnamese heritage of comparable depth to Hoi An — UNESCO citadel, royal tombs, refined cuisine — with less congestion in the historic core and a scale that allows actual exploration rather than crowd navigation.

Đồng Hới
Vietnam
Đồng Hới is the base for the Phong Nha cave system — the world's largest caves — an attraction that dwarfs anything in Hoi An in terms of natural wonder. For travellers willing to go further off the tourist trail, the payoff is extraordinary.
