Barcelona is one of Europe's great cities and has the architecture, food, beach, and cultural scene to justify its popularity many times over. The issue is scale: 30 million annual visitors to a city of 1.6 million residents has created real friction, from housing pressure that the city government is trying to address with short-term rental bans to tourist areas that are effectively theme parks rather than functioning neighbourhoods. The city is still wonderful if you plan carefully and step away from the obvious drag.

Las Ramblas is almost unusably congested in summer. La Sagrada Familia requires pre-booked timed entry months in advance. Barceloneta beach is packed July-August. The city has 30 million annual visitors.

Gaudí architecture is genuinely unlike anything else on earth, the food culture is outstanding, and the city has a distinct political and cultural identity that survives the crowds.

March-April or October-November

Major international airport. Metro, bus, and excellent walkability within the city.

Pickpocketing is a real issue in tourist areas. The most famous sights require advance planning. But the city is large enough that quieter zones exist.

Instead of Barcelona

Girona is Catalan, beautiful, medieval, and 35 minutes from Barcelona. It offers a well-preserved old city, a strong food scene, and a genuine alternative to spending all your time in Barcelona's tourist corridors. Day-trippable from Barcelona or excellent as a base.
