Fresh Air › Instead of Dubrovnik
Korčula
Korčula's old town is a miniature fortified city on a small peninsula, built by the Venetians and remarkably well preserved. The island grows its own distinctive wines — the white Pošip grape is particularly good and not widely exported. The town claims to be the birthplace of Marco Polo, which is disputed but adds some character. Outside of August, the pace of life is genuinely quiet. The beaches are good and the local restaurants are considerably better value than anything in Dubrovnik.
Why visit
A beautifully preserved medieval island town, excellent local wine (Pošip and Grk varietals), the claimed birthplace of Marco Polo, and less mayhem.
Crowd level
Gets some visitors, particularly in August, but nothing approaching Dubrovnik's scale.
Best time
June or early September
Getting there
Ferry from Split or Dubrovnik. Car ferry available. The old town is entirely walkable.
Tradeoffs
Less architecturally dramatic than Dubrovnik. Island ferry logistics require some planning.
