Hokitika
Hokitika is a former gold rush town on New Zealand's West Coast, best known for its greenstone (pounamu) carving tradition and the extraordinary turquoise water of Hokitika Gorge. The gorge, carved through grey bedrock with water coloured by glacial flour, is a 35-minute drive from town. The wild beaches of the West Coast, backed by rainforest and facing the Tasman Sea, are dramatically empty.

The town itself is modest. West Coast weather is genuinely unpredictable. Best as part of a South Island road trip.
