Chioggia
Chioggia occupies the southern end of the Venetian lagoon on a grid of canals, colourful buildings, and narrow streets that looks like Venice but functions like a real Italian town. The fish market has operated continuously for centuries. Residents actually live and work here. The vaporetto trip from Venice takes about 90 minutes via Pellestrina and passes through the quieter parts of the lagoon. It is one of the most rewarding half-days from Venice, or a good base for exploring the lagoon without paying Venice prices.
Why visit
A working lagoon city with colourful facades, a daily fish market, canal-side trattorias, and the visual language of Venice without any of the tourism economy.
Crowd level
Almost entirely Italian visitors. No cruise ships, no tour groups. The fish market draws locals from the region.

May to June and September — warm without peak summer crowds
Getting there
Bus from Venice Piazzale Roma (1hr) or ferry from Pellestrina. Day trip or overnight.
Tradeoffs
Smaller and less architecturally spectacular than Venice. Limited accommodation options. English rarely spoken.
